EMDR Therapy
Evidence-based trauma therapy that helps you process difficult experiences and reclaim your life.
What is EMDR therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a specialized therapy that helps your brain process traumatic or stressful memories to reduce distress.
Traumatic memories sometimes get stuck in the brain and stay vivid and emotionally charged. This feels like the experience is still occurring even though it has already passed.
During EMDR therapy in Oak Point, TX, you focus briefly on the memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation. Similar to how your brain processes experiences during REM sleep, EMDR helps your brain naturally integrate difficult memories.
EMDR therapy activates your brain’s natural healing ability to reduce the emotional charge of painful memories.
Bilateral Stimulation (BLS)
BLS is a unique and important component of EMDR. BLS simply means that you are activating both sides of the body and brain. For example, BLS can be eye movements, tapping, vibration tappers held in your hand, or listening to sounds. BLS assists in the processing and decreases overwhelm.

How is EMDR therapy different from other therapies?
EMDR and the Brain
Typically, our brains naturally recover from traumatic memories. Most of the time, our brains can manage and resolve difficult experiences to move forward in life. However, sometimes memories get stuck in the brain and body and need extra help.
When we experience a stressful situation, our stress responses activate. The stress response is our natural fight, flight, freeze, or fawn instincts that help us stay safe. However, when the scary or stressful experience passes, but the distress remains, the images, thoughts, and emotions may feel overwhelming. Ultimately, this feels like we are back in that stressful moment.
EMDR therapy helps the brain process these memories so the body feels safe again.

FAQ’s
How effective is EMDR for trauma?
Research shows that EMDR is very effective for trauma recovery. The World Health Organization and American Psychological Association both recognize EMDR as an effective treatment for trauma.
How long does EMDR take to work?
Several factors contribute to how long it may take for you to feel better. Some of these include your current safety, your readiness to process, and the severity of your traumatic experiences. Some clients only need a few weeks, and others may need several months.
Will EMDR be overwhelming or re-traumatizing?
The benefit of EMDR is that you don’t have to talk about every detail of your experiences. In fact, we let your body and brain use their natural healing ability to process difficult experiences. I like to think of it as dipping your toe in the water and then back out again. We never dive all the way into the deep end. We just do a little bit at a time, taking you back to your past experiences and then bringing you back in the present. Schedule a phone call today and we can discuss any concerns you may have!
Can EMDR make you worse?
EMDR can bring up uncomfortable emotions and body sensations that are linked to traumatic experiences. This is why it’s crucial to listen to your body and learn practical tools to help your body feel safe and calm. We will work to help you build your capacity so you can handle more. EMDR can also bring a lot of relief. I’ll assist you in being gentle with yourself and going at a pace that’s right for you.
What if I can't remember my trauma clearly?
The thing about trauma is the body remembers! We will start with what you can remember and then let the body lead by noticing sensations. Ever notice your chest get tight, upset stomach, or pressure in your head? The body sends us signals all the time. We just need to learn to listen and provide the care and support it needs.
Can I do EMDR therapy online?
Yes! We can do EMDR therapy through video calls. You just need access to the internet, a quiet and private space, and a phone or computer.
